Short: Converting man pages to many formats Author: Thomas Phelps Uploader: aGGreSSor/CPU (amitrans narod ru) Type: text/misc Version: 3.3 Requires: ABIv0; i386; InstallerLG, IconX Architecture: i386-aros Distribution: aminet ============================== F E A T U R E S ============================== PolyglotMan takes man pages from most of the popular flavors of UNIX and transforms them into any of a number of text source formats. PolyglotMan was formerly known as RosettaMan. The name of the binary is still called rman , for scripts that depend on that name; mnemonically, just think "reverse man". Previously PolyglotMan required pages to be formatted by nroff prior to its processing. With version 3.x, it prefers [tn]roff source and usually produces results that are better yet. And source processing is the only way to translate tables. Source format translation is not as mature as formatted, however, so try formatted translation as a backup This version 3.3 is able to convert man pages to: - ASCII -- plain text - TkMan -- Tk format wrapped with commands - Tk -- just emit list of text-tags pairs - Sections -- simple plain text reformat - Roff -- primitive analogue of roff - HTML -- HTML 4.0 standard document - XML -- DocBook XML support by by Aaron Hawley - MIME -- generates MIME compliant to RFC 1563 - LaTeX -- typical LaTeX - LaTeX2e -- rest same as old LaTeX - RTF -- Rich Text Format (RTF) could use more work - pod -- Perl 5 pod, plain old documentation format - AmigaGuide -- AmigaGuide support by Chris Young Filters excluded from the application: - PostScript -- Use groff or psroff to generate PostScript - FrameMaker -- FrameMaker comes with filters that convert from roff to MIF ============================ R E Q U I R E M E N T ========================== PolyglotMan tested and worked fine on the following configurations: - IcarOS i386 (Kickstart 51.51, Workbench 40.0, AROS ABIv0) - AROS One i386 (Kickstart 51.51, Workbench 40.0, AROS ABIv0) ================================= U S A G E ================================= In Wanderer (or WB) you can use a RMAN tool-script by aGGreSSor It's more convenient for conversion to Text, RTF, AmigaGuide, HTML or XML. (Optional) installation can be done by clicking on the "Install" icon. You can improve a man pages conversion to HTML if you use RMAN for man->RTF conversion and use RTF2HTML (from RTF-riddle package) for RTF->HTML 5.0. PolyglotMan is not perfect in all cases, but it usually does a good job, and in any case reduces the problem of converting man pages to light editing. You may need to delete all text from the beginning of the man-file to .TH tag in the source man-file for getting the best conversion. This is especially true for the AmigaGuide because unrecognized tags appearing in man pages after 2003 will be converted to spaces. An AmigaGuide file that starts with spaces will not open.
